Bookmarking
We can bookmark sites by adding them to our Favorites on your internet browser on your computer. This is great for it allows you to go to a favourite site in a hurry. Select the bookmark and instantly you are at the site. This is only useful though when you are working at your computer where you created the bookmark/favourite. You can export your favourites to another computer but there is one better method – online bookmarking.
We will be looking at Delicious (http://www.delicious.com/). There are many others but we’ll focus on this one. The nice thing about using an online bookmarking tool is that it doesn’t matter where you are, as long as youhave an internet connection, you can access your bookmarks. Just like DropBox, you don’t have to carry around a flash drive.
Like the rest of the web tools we looked at, go to the site and create an account – it’s FREE!
Even if you don’t create an account, just going to delicious and searching it will provide you links for just about anything that you might need to use in the classroom. We’ll have a quick look at it and you decide if this is something you might want to use.
Internet Safety
As the teacher who is allowing your students to access the internet, we have tolook after their well being. Teachers spend considerable time in Canada looking at internet safety. I know of an instant where a young girl was befriended by an older man from the USA – she made her way to the Canada-USA border in her attempt to meet this man. Thank goodness the authorities stop her short of crossing the border. Who knows how this might have ended up! Cyberbullying is also growing in occurrences – students have to be educated in the proper etiquette of interacting using the internet and to be aware of what to watchout for. More importantly, students are educated in not revealing any personal information when they are on the internet. Some sites to look at which are excellent resources for use in this area are:
Audacity -Podcasting
Use www.youtube.comand do a search for "podcasting using Audacity"
You will get a lot of short videos that will show you how to use Audacity
We're going to have fun with this - did anyone bring headsets or ear buds??
We also need mics - we have about a dozen.
We might have to partner up to do this - share a mic and share one of the ear buds
We are going to use the program Audacity which is a free download from the internet. If you download this program you will want to also download the 'lameplug-in' as well. With this plug-in, you can then convert your audio to and MP3 which is basically a universal audio format.
This is an online audio program which is free and you would have to register to use and it is found at this URL: http://aviary.com/ . If you decide to use this online program, register and select the "Audio Editor" button. You will end up with a program to work with that is much like Audacity but it is web based. This means that you could have access to this program anywhere you are as long as you have access to the internet. Another nice feature is you don't have to download anything!

Using the site provided, create an ‘internet awareness’ superhero. Then build a glog (www.glogster.com) that explains the characteristics of your new superhero.
